Hazrat Umm-e-Ma’bad (R.A) and the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
By Shumaila Munib Shumail :
The incident of Hazrat Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A) and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) during the migration to Medina is a very faith-inspiring and blessed incident, which has been mentioned in all the reliable books of the Prophet’s biography.
Background of Migration:
When the Quraysh made life difficult for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his companions in Makkah, by the command of Allah Almighty, he migrated to Madinah. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A) accompanied him on the occasion of migration. Along the route to Madinah, various tribes had set up tents and inns at multiple locations. At one of these places, a very faith-strengthening incident took place, which is known in history as the “Incident of Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A).”
Umm-e- Ma’bad’s (R.A) Tent:
The Prophet (PBUH) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) reached the place of Qadeed near the tribe of Khuza’ah on their way. There was a tent here that belonged to a kind, compassionate and respected woman, Atika bint Khalid Khuza’ah (nickname: Umm-e- Ma’bad) (R.A) .Where she used to provide food, milk and water to the travelers.
Arrival of the Prophet (PBUH) in the tent of Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A):
When Prophet Muhammad reached in the tent of Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A), He (PBUH) asked her for some food or milk. Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A) said, “By Allah! If I had anything, I would have served, but it is a drought, the goats are weak, and nothing is available.” Meanwhile, the Prophet (PBUH) saw a thin goat tied in a corner. The Messenger of Allah Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked, “Whose goat is this?”
Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A) replied, “This is mine, but it is very weak; there is no milk in it.”The Prophet (PBUH) said:“Do you allow me to drink its milk?”Umm-e- Ma’bad(R.A) said in surprise, “Yes, if you think that some milk will come out of it, then definitely drink it.”The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) passed his blessed hand over the goat’s back and mentioned the name of Allah. Suddenly its udders filled with milk. He (PBUH) ordered a large vessel and drew out milk. First he gave it to Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A), then to Hazrat Abu Bakr, then to himself and then he filled the vessel again and left it with Umm -e- Ma’bad (R.A).
The testimony of Umm-e- Ma’bad (R.A):
When her husband, Abu Ma’bad (R.A), returned to the tent, he saw this scene he was astonished and asked, “O Umm-e-Ma’bad (R.A) ! Where did this milk come from?” Umm-e-Ma’bad (R.A) replied to him, “A blessed luminous being came to our tent with his companion, whose hands are blessed. He (PBUH) touched this goat and our weak goat’s udders filled with milk. They both drank their fill of milk and left a bowl for us. Then she described to her husband the beautiful and blessed appearance and introduction of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that is preserved in the form of Naat forever in the books of Seerat-un-Nabi (PBUH) .
Naat of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Umm-e-Ma’bad (R.A) in Arabic with Urdu and English translation:
English translation:
“I saw a man of evident radiance with a luminous face;
He is well-built, neither blemished by a big belly nor disfigured by a small head. He is overtly handsome and well-proportioned.
His eyes are wide and very black, his eyelashes long,
His voice resounding and his neck prominent.
His beard was thick, his eyebrows arched and as if they met.
When silent, he was dignified, and when he spoke,
He was eminent and full of splendor. From afar,
He is the most beautiful and striking of people and,
up close, the most delightful and graceful.
His speech is sweet and clear, neither too brief nor excessive,
Like pearls strung together, descending one after another.
He is of moderate height, not too tall to stand out nor too short to be overlooked.
A branch between two branches;
He appeared as the most radiant of three and the best in stature.
He was surrounded by companions who listened attentively to him when He spoke.
When he commanded, they rushed to carry out his order.
He was well-served and attended, neither sullen nor reproachable.”

Later situation:
On hearing this statement, Abu Ma’bad (R.A) said:”These are the ones about whom the Quraysh of Mecca are reporting and whose prophethood is well known.
After this incident, Umm-e-Ma’bad (R.A.) and her husband accepted Islam, and both became companions of the Prophet (PBUH).
Conclusion:
This incident is clear proof that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is a source of blessings from Allah. His personality was so attractive and dignified that even an ordinary Bedouin woman, upon seeing him, made a statement that is still known as the “Statement of Umm-e-Ma’bad (R.A) .”Allah Almighty blessed him (PBUH) with external and internal beauty and miracles so that every heart would testify.
