Statesmanship

Statesmanship

writer/Ch Zahid Shakoor (In My Opinion)

Dear Friends, today I will talk about statesmanship. In writing this column, I have taken guidance from some books, incorporated some of my own observations, and included the latest circumstances of Pakistan. If there is any mistake or shortcoming, please do let me know and guide me, because a person learns gradually, and I am always eager to learn. So, let’s read the column.

“STATESMAN/STATESMEN-SHIP”

A “statesman” is a political leader whose integrity and dedication to the public good outweigh their pursuit of power, personal gain, or aggrandizement. The term encapsulates wisdom, vision, and a commitment to ethical leadership—qualities that transcend mere political maneuverings. To grasp this concept more deeply, let’s delve into insights from three English literary sources, the Quran, and Hadith, and evaluate Imran Khan’s contributions through the lens of statesmanship.
below i am going to quote some references from English Literature and Quran/Hadith for better understandings.

References from English Literature:

  1. Profiles in Courage” by John F. Kennedy – This book highlights the acts of bravery and integrity by American Senators, exemplifying statesmanship by prioritizing national interest over personal or political gains.
  2. The prince” by Niccolò Machiavelli – Although often interpreted as a guide to ruthless political tactics, some readings suggest that true statesmanship involves placing the welfare of the state above all else.
  3. Lincoln: A Life” by Ronald C. White – This biography captures Abraham Lincoln’s journey and how his decisions during the American Civil War underscored his statesmanship, marked by a commitment to unity and justice.

Islamic References:

Reference from the Quran:
The Holy Quran emphasizes integrity and justice as core values for leadership. Surah An-Nisa (4:58) states: “Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.”

Reference from Hadith:
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) illustrated statesmanship through his teachings and actions. A hadith from Sahih Bukhari states: “The best of leaders are those whom you love and who love you, and who pray for you, and you pray for them.”

Imran Khan’s Statesmanship:

As a critical observer and supporter of Pakistani politics, I acknowledge the multifaceted nature of Imran Khan’s leadership. While no leader is devoid of faults, Khan has exhibited critical statesmanship in several instances, often prioritizing the welfare of Pakistan and its people over personal or political advantages.

Instance 1: Resisting Unfavorable Legislation
A recent development during the PDM government involved an amendment in the NAB law, raising the minimum amount from which financial scrutiny begins to PKR 50 billion. Despite potential personal relief, Imran Khan opposed this change, reflecting his commitment to uphold just and accountable governance for the greater good of Pakistan.

Statesmanship

Instance 2: Avoiding Potential Conflict
Another commendable act of statesmanship was Khan’s decision to cancel a PTI gathering based on intelligence about possible violence due to an ongoing controversial Supreme Court case. His choice to prioritize public safety over political mobilization, even at a potential cost to his political momentum, underscores responsibility and prudence.

These actions highlight Khan’s capacity for statesmanship—maintaining a focus on national interest, ensuring the safety of citizens, and advocating for lawful governance under the 1973 Constitution.

Embracing Democracy and Unity:
Democracy thrives on the pillars of integrity, justice, and representation. The unity of a nation, adherence to constitutional principles, and active engagement with all societal factions create a resilient and progressive Pakistan. As citizens, our collective responsibility is to support ethical leadership, uphold democratic ideals, and foster unity.

Conclusion:
Imran Khan’s leadership, though not free from criticism or mistakes, showcases several instances of true statesmanship. As Pakistan charts its future, the alignment of democratic values and unity will be instrumental in this journey.

In essence, the significance of statesmanship observed through various sources and reflection on Imran Khan’s actions presents a narrative of potential and responsible governance. Our unwavering commitment to these principles will serve as the backbone for Pakistan’s continued progress and stability.
Pakistan Zindabad!
