Physiotherapy is instrumental in promoting a healthy lifestyle
Attock (City Reporter) Physiotherapy significantly contributes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, with 420 million individuals around the globe reaping its benefits annually. This therapy is gaining traction in Pakistan as well, focusing on children with congenital disabilities through physiotherapy treatment, enabling them to become valuable contributors to society. Dr. Aman Shuja, a prominent physiotherapy expert and member of the National Physiotherapy Association of Pakistan, shared her insights during an exclusive interview.
Pakistan, similar to many other countries, offers a five-year Doctor of Physiotherapy degree program. This program has gained significant popularity among medical graduates, as evidenced by the statistic that out of 27 medical fields, 24 are related to physiotherapy, highlighting its essential role in the healthcare sector. In small towns and rural regions, there remains a significant gap in awareness regarding physiotherapy, a treatment approach that relies primarily on exercise and various types of equipment, often with little to no reliance on medication. Additionally, this modality can provide care for patients who have not found relief through allopathic or other treatment methods.
Various physiotherapy techniques are employed based on the specific condition being treated. This therapeutic approach facilitates the movement of affected organs by alleviating pain through a range of physical methods. It has been recognized as beneficial for managing illnesses, aiding in organ rehabilitation post-surgery, addressing respiratory issues, and treating numerous neurological and psychological disorders.
Furthermore, physical therapy is essential in addressing various conditions such as back pain, paralysis, rehabilitation following sports injuries, postural issues, diabetes management, venous disorders, frozen shoulder, dysmenorrhea, Parkinson’s disease, polio, neurological impairments, and issues related to the hands and feet. It also significantly contributes to the treatment of asthma, intellectual disabilities, underactive bladder, specific respiratory illnesses, and recovery after cardiac surgery.
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in addressing women’s health issues, including the preservation of maternal well-being both prior to and following childbirth, as well as aiding in recovery from breast cancer. For conditions like arthritis, orthopedic specialists typically recommend physiotherapy after a designated period. In addition to this, physiotherapy can provide relief from both persistent and occasional pain. Typically, individuals experience pain relief for up to 24 hours following a single session, while a series of 4 to 12 sessions can lead to long-term or sustained alleviation of discomfort.
Physiotherapy is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, particularly for individuals aiming to remain active or promote their well-being in later years. In today’s world, it is advisable for such individuals to seek the expertise of a qualified physiotherapist. The significance and benefits of physiotherapy cannot be overlooked.
She mentioned that, with the support of the National Physiotherapy Association of Pakistan, a series of camps will be established shortly to enhance awareness of physiotherapy in the Attock community. These camps will offer free treatment to those who are poor and in need.
