Highlights of Pakistan Day and 23rd March
By Hannan Sher.
To dive into the dept of 23rd March, we have to have some knowledge of the struggles, which enforce the need of a separate homeland.
As the subcontinent has always been a land of rich culture and hierarchy, filled with diversity. Many religions, customs, values, and beliefs coexisted in this remarkable region. However, life was not as smooth as it seemed. The War of Independence (1857) disrupted the peace, making survival the primary concern for all.
One dominant power ruled over the other, enforcing its authority. Slavery and oppression were widespread, with little respect for religion and humanity.
After immense struggles, power dynamics began shifting between Muslims and Hindus. As we know, their beliefs and ways of life were vastly different. This led to a new debate—the demand for a separate homeland. The struggle continued to secure a place where Muslims could live independently, free from external influence.
March 23rd marked a significant step toward that goal.
On March 23, 1940, the All-India Muslim League held its annual session at Minto Park, Lahore, presided over by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and attended by key leaders. A.K. Fazlul Huq presented the resolution. The Lahore Resolution, later known as the Pakistan Resolution, demanded a separate homeland for the Muslims of British India. It stated that Muslims and Hindus were two distinct nations and that Muslim-majority regions should have independent states. This resolution became the foundation for the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
Today, this event is celebrated as Pakistan Day. However, March 23rd holds even greater historical significance due to several key events:
Pakistan Becomes an Islamic Republic (1956).
First Pakistan Day Parade (1957)
Indo-Pak Border Clashes (1965)
Constitution Draft Finalized (1972)
Military Parade Resumes After Years (2015)
Pakistan Successfully Tests Shaheen-I Missile (1996)
Pakistan Wins Hockey World Cup (1994)
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit in Islamabad (2022)
Azerbaijan’s President Honored with Nishan-e-Pakistan (2023)
These all events signify the importance of 23rd March.
In short, while we celebrate this magnificent day, we must also reflect on the current challenges facing our beloved country. Pakistan is struggling with uncertainty in every field of life. It is our duty to actively contribute to its growth, ensuring a brighter future for the upcoming generations.
As, we are stuck at the point of beginning. No progress at all we have seen in past years. May Allah his blessings for us.
